Although this did not appear to be a suitable part for additive manufacturing, the topology optimization increased the rigidity more than expected and the substantial reduction in weight was so pronounced that a conventionally necessary counterweight became superfluous. As a result, it became feasible to reduce the size to 450 mm, a dimension that was just about achievable diagonally.
