Diverse laser technology applications in research

The application of laser light has proven to be an extremely versatile and powerful method that can be used in numerous scientific fields, from biomedical imaging to non-linear processes, spectroscopy and beyond – the applications of laser technology are almost limitless. Draw inspiration from the applications and explore new ways laser light can support your scientific goals.

Green laser on a mountain top

How the laser prevents lightning strikes

Preventing damage caused by lightning strikes is one of the aims of the EU's "Laser Lightning Rod" project. TRUMPF has developed a special laser for this purpose. High-intensity laser pulses are used as lightning conductors on Säntis, a Swiss mountain.

HHG beamlines for spectroscopy and imaging in EUV/XUV

HHG and cavity enhancement: The fibre-based ultrashort pulse lasers from AFS, combined with pulse post-compression methods, are ideal for generating higher harmonic radiation. These HHG beamlines can be used for spectroscopy and imaging in EUV/XUV.

Enhancement resonators

Due to their high average power and pulse repetition frequencies, fibre lasers are perfectly suited as front-ends for enhancement resonators.

Fusion research

CO2 lasers with stabilised wavelengths and powers are indispensable tools for plasma density control systems such as those used in ITER, the world's largest fusion experiment.
