We reduce emissions at our sites by improving the energy efficiency of our buildings and by using renewable energy.

How do we reduce emissions at our sites?

We want to reduce site-related emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 55 percent by 2030 compared to the base year 2018/19.

We use green electricity at all of our sites.

We meet 100 percent of our electricity needs using renewable energies. Preferably through long-term contracts to support the expansion of new green power plants.

We are producing more and more green electricity ourselves.

By 2027, we want to equip all suitable roof areas at our sites with photovoltaic systems and are also examining the use of geothermal and wind power.

We improve the energy efficiency of our buildings.

We use waste heat from our production for heating. In addition, we continuously optimize the power input of our heating systems.

We are replacing combustion engines with electric cars.

We are electrifying our vehicle fleet and want to reduce the CO₂ emissions produced by the fleet by 50 percent by 2030 compared to the 2018/19 fiscal year.

We are increasing energy efficiency at our sites

TRUMPF has been producing on a carbon-neutral basis since 2020. If we are not (yet) able to prevent greenhouse gas emissions, we offset them by purchasing CO₂ compensation certificates. In order not to cause greenhouse gas emissions in the first place, we attach great importance to the energy efficiency of our infrastructure.

That is why our buildings and systems are state-of-the-art and designed for a long service life. For our production sites we work with long-term action plans, which we use to plan, implement and document energy-saving measures. We also reduce our CO₂ emissions by using renewable energy. A certified energy management system in accordance with ISO 50001 has been in use for several years at all European production sites. This ensures that we reduce our power input to a minimum.

Examples from our sites: how we save emissions worldwide

Germany: Saving energy in standby mode

We have reduced the power consumption of the machines in the TRUMPF Laser Application Center lab by 25 percent - through new standby versions of the machines.

Germany: More LED, less electricity

LED lights use up to 80 percent less energy than conventional lights. TRUMPF is therefore converting all sites worldwide to LED lighting. In the new center of excellence for chipping at the Hettingen site (Germany), we can control the lighting in the production hall area-by-area and as needed. The resulting potential for saving electricity is around 60 percent. Other sites will soon follow.

Germany: Production building heated by waste heat

Our machines and lasers need to be cooled during start-up. This results in waste heat. TRUMPF uses this waste process heat from production at many sites – for heating buildings, for example. This significantly reduces gas consumption. At the Schramberg site alone, this covers 95 percent of the annual heating requirement for the administration and production building.

Switzerland: Thermal insulation through roof renovation

Good insulation keeps heat inside a building. At the Swiss site in Grüsch, we were able to significantly reduce the building's heat loss by renovating the roof with thermal insulation in 2021. As a result, the site will save more than 85,000 kWh of gas annually in the future. This is equivalent to the average annual consumption of five households.

Mexico: Photovoltaic cells on roofs

TRUMPF generates around 900 MWh of electricity by installing photovoltaic systems with around 650 kilowatt peak (kWp) output on the roofs of the Mexican site in Apodaca. That is almost enough to supply the site entirely with self-generated electricity.

USA: Optimization of cooling circuits

The process cooling of our machines and systems requires a lot of energy. The Farmington site (USA) saves up to 650,000 kWh of electricity annually by optimizing the cooling circuits, for example by reducing the system pressure, adjusting the circulation speed and completely switching off the machines outside of usage times. This roughly corresponds to the electricity produced by a single wind turbine in three months.

Sustainable mobility

Regardless of how our employees travel to work, we encourage them to reduce their CO₂ emissions with attractive offers. At the same time, we want to ensure that mobility at the Ditzingen site and travel between the different company sites is as efficient as possible. We will also reduce the CO₂ emissions in our vehicle fleet by 50% by 2030 compared to the fiscal year of 2018/19. One of the ways we will achieve this is by electrifying the TRUMPF company vehicles.

Business mobility management

We want to considerably reduce the CO₂ footprint of our employees when they travel to work. For this reason, at some of our sites in Germany we offer the option of leasing a business bike at affordable rates. We also make sure that cyclists and motorcyclists have plenty of spaces for bikes, E-bikes and motorcycles, and provide showers and lockers. With discounts on local public transportation (ÖPNV), we also encourage people to travel by public transportation. At the Ditzingen site, we have a street scooter - an electric vehicle developed by TRUMPF - that employees can use to get around the company premises.

Electro-mobility

In 2019 in Ditzingen, TRUMPF opened one of the largest electric service stations in Germany. 86 charging stations are available to employees in the company parking garage. The installed charging stations have a combined power output of around 1,000 kilowatts. This enables employees to conveniently charge their vehicle while they are at work. As a high-tech company, we are not only end users of alternative electric drive technologies, we are also an important supplier. Many TRUMPF lasers are used worldwide, for example, in manufacturing batteries for electro-mobility.
